How to Buy a Vacuum Cleaner

By M James

If you're considering a new vacuum cleaner, then read this guide and ensure that you get the right one to meet your needs.

1. Consider why you are replacing your existing vacuum cleaner. Is it too big, too heavy, or not up to the job? If it's broken, can you fix your existing vacuum cleaner yourself?

2. Once you've decided you need a new vacuum cleaner, you need to make sure that it is the right size. Is the vacuum cleaner easy to manoeuvre, can you attach all the tools easily? Storage space is likely to be an issue, so there needs to be somewhere for it to live when it is not being used. There's no point buying a feature packed model that's much too big for your storage space. Make sure that the vacuum cleaner you choose is the right weight, and the right height. Is it too heavy to carry upstairs? Does it hurt your back when using it because it's not the right height?

3. Would you be better with a cylinder or upright vacuum cleaner? Cylinder vacuum cleaners are smaller and more manageable, whereas upright cleaners are often more comfortable to use.

4. Should you choose a bag or bagless vacuum cleaner? This may be an issue if you often have to empty the bag, or you may not have a preference.

5. How often will your vacuum cleaner be used? If it is used daily in a hotel or other commercial environment then it will need to be more robust than a vacuum cleaner used once a week in a small flat.

6. What sort of floors will it be cleaning? Some vacuum cleaners are capable of cleaning more than one floor type, so that you don't need several floor cleaners. If you have laminate floor as well as carpet, why not see if you can clean them both with the same cleaner?

7. What tools do you need? Depending on the size and type of room you will be cleaning, you may need long extension poles to reach up to the ceiling, or nozzles to get into hard to reach crevices, or for cleaning upholstery.

8. If you have pets or allergies then you might need to check that your vacuum cleaner is fitted with an HEPA filter. This ensures that pet hairs and other allergens are not left on the floor.

9. Remember that cheap isn't necessarily best value. If you know that you use a vacuum cleaner a lot, and that it will be used for long periods of time, then a cheap domestic vacuum cleaner might not be the right choice. It could save you money initially, but is likely to need replacing sooner than one designed to be used more often.

10. Will you purchase in a shop or online? If you have already tried the model you want to buy, you may prefer to look online and see if you can find it cheaper. You may however, prefer to buy locally for additional peace of mind.

Now you know what to look for when choosing a new vacuum cleaner, there is no excuse to get the wrong model! There are many to choose from and remember that the leading brands are popular for a reason.
