4 Common Myths About Air Purifiers

By Cathy Byrd

1. Air purifiers remove 100% of air particles

If this statement is advertised in an air purifier commercial, it is of your best interest that you avoid the air purifier being mentioned. Air purifiers at their best can only filter up to 99.9% of the airborne particles available in the air around us. The performance is then influenced by the room space to air purifier filtration ratio and filter cleanliness. A clogged up filter will not be as efficient as a clean one.

2. Air purifiers need maintenance and cleaning

Air purifiers, as with many filter base devices such as air conditioners, are mechanical devices which require regular maintenance and servicing in order to optimize their effects. For individuals who are not willing to spend money on maintenance during the early years of purchase, it would be wise to purchase an air purifier with a warranty.

3. Toxic chemicals in the air can be removed with air purifiers

This, of all assumptions, is a dangerous one to make. Though ozone generators and ionizers are known to remove odors that are stubborn and chemicals in the air, to rely solely on the purifiers to remove unknown chemicals in the air is a dangerous act. It would be wise to contact the local authority to handle the situation.

4. Allergy patients and asthma patients should rely on air purifiers

Though air purifiers are known to remove particles that will irritate the breathing system for patients, it should not be relied on too much, unless it is undergoing regular maintenance. This is mainly because most purifiers tend to re-release the trapped up particles once the filters become clogged. This will then create an even worse situation for the patients.
